MESSENGER: “LET’S CELEBRATE THE REBIRTH OF A GREAT CITY”
At a recent St. Louis CITY SC match, St. Louis Post-Dispatch Metro Columnist Tony Messenger looked out over the lights of St. Louis and realized the potential the soccer team has to bring the region together and help revitalize the metro. In a recent column, he detailed his experience and the hope he has for the future of St. Louis.
“From Edwardsville to Wildwood to the Central West End — or like some of the St. Louis City SC players, from Bosnia to Brazil, and from Sweden to Switzerland — St. Louis can embrace all of us,” he wrote. “Meet me at St. Louis’ CityPark, and let’s celebrate the rebirth of a great city.”
Last month’s inaugural STL TechWeek 2023 brought together 5,000 registrants and 253 speakers — including Jim McKelvey, St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones, and Missouri Governor Mike Parson — at more than 30 events throughout the metro. Established by TechSTL to activate St. Louis’ technology community and support upward mobility in STEM fields, STL TechWeek is already in planning stages for 2024.
BUILDING ST. LOUIS’ TALENT PIPELINE FOR THE FUTURE
If St. Louis hopes to grow industry sectors called for in the STL 2030 Jobs Plan, the metro must build a robust talent pipeline. Organizations like GSL Member Rung for Women, GSL Chair’s Council Member St. Louis Community College, and Southwestern Illinois College are working rapidly to expand workforce development options in advance of future developments like the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency campus and the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Center.
In the 21st annual J.D. Power U.S. Full-Service Investor Satisfaction Study, Edward Jones, Wells Fargo Advisors, and Stifel — all executive-level members of the GSL Chair’s Council — ranked among the top 12. The study surveyed more than 6,000 investors on their satisfaction with full-service investment firms, ranking trust, people, products and services, value for fees, and more.
In April, AT&T’s Craig Unruh, President of Missouri and Arkansas and a founding member of the GSL Chair’s Council, was joined by Gov. Mike Parson and state leaders in Jefferson City to celebrate the 5th anniversary of Missouri’s participation in FirstNet, Built with AT&T, the only network built with and for America’s first responders and the extended public safety community — extending critical infrastructure throughout the region and state.
This week, the Missouri Botanical Garden opened “Chihuly in the Garden 2023,” an exhibit scheduled to run through Oct. 15, 2023. Curated expressly for the Missouri Botanical Garden — a GSL Investor Council member — by world-renowned artist Dale Chihuly, the exhibition features thousands of pieces of blown glass forms in 20 installations throughout the Garden’s grounds.
Last month saw the opening of the 155,739-square-foot Residence Inn by Marriott in Clayton, Missouri, the first new hotel to open in the city in decades. The 12-story, 170-room hotel was a project of Midas Enterprises, parent company of GSL Chair’s Council member Midas Hospitality, and was funded by Hermann Companies, an executive-level member of the GSL Chair’s Council, among others.
For the next seven years, the Stifel logo will adorn the sleeves of official St. Louis Cardinals’ jerseys, thanks to a new partnership between GSL Chair’s Council Member Cardinals and Executive-Level Member of the GSL Chair’s Council Stifel. “It's a highly regarded company. They're local… and we think it fits with the Cardinal image as well,” said Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr.
GSL Board Member Pat Coleman retired last month from leading behavioral health nonprofit Behavioral Health Services, where she worked for more than 26 years, serving as CEO for 10. “She is an innovator, national leader in mental and behavioral health, and a true civic champion of St. Louis,” said GSL CEO Jason Hall.
Greater St. Louis, Inc. this week welcomed Missouri Congressman Sam Graves, U.S. Representative for the state’s 6th Congressional District, which encompasses parts of Lincoln County in the St. Louis metro. Congressman Graves, who serves as the Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, addressed business leaders in attendance during a Public Policy Speaker Series event.
