Additional Tornado Relief a “Big Win” for St. Louis

St. Louis is getting some major support in tornado recovery efforts. U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt led the state's congressional delegation in urging assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which will provide expedited disaster assistance to support private property debris removal in the City of St. Louis. The funding — FEMA will cover 75% of eligible removal, with the state of Missouri covering 25% — will supplement state and city recovery efforts. At the same time, FEMA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will offer their technical expertise to ensure “safe, efficient, and accountable debris operations.”

“This is a big win for St. Louis and will help us quickly and effectively help St. Louisans get uninhabitable buildings off their property, making it possible to move toward rebuilding after the tornado,” said St. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer. “Getting this federal assistance is a result of great collaboration and strong bipartisan support from Missouri’s entire delegation to Washington. I particularly want to thank Sen. Schmitt and Gov. Kehoe for leading a tremendous push over the past few weeks to bring this help to St. Louis.”

The Bottom Line: We know that recovering from the tornado’s devastating path will be a long, hard road. But when we work together at every level — national, state, and local — we get farther faster. “Our office has been proud to work closely with Sen. Eric Schmitt, alongside the rest of Missouri’s federal delegation, and Mayor Spencer to ensure St. Louis can move forward and expedite its recovery,” said Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe.

Fellows Experience Launches New Leaders

A new class of leaders graduated this week from the Fellows Experience, an initiative of Greater St. Louis, Inc. that works with local companies and organizations to cultivate and retain mid-career professionals. The 87 graduates of this year’s cohort — the program’s 19th — expand the ranks of the 1,200 Fellows Experience alumni in St. Louis and beyond. Twenty sponsoring organizations, many of them GSL investors, invested in the success of the cohort and a competitive, equitable, and future-ready St. Louis.

The Bottom Line: The Fellows Experience dovetails with the goals and mission of Greater St. Louis, Inc., enhancing the capacity of St. Louis’ organizations and companies and retaining regional talent. Said Trezette Dixon, Vice President, the Fellows Experience: “During this program year, each of the Fellows grew individually within their organizations, and in doing so, they widened the pipeline of inclusive leaders our region needs to thrive.”

A New Era for SLSO

A ribbon-cutting this week celebrated the opening of Powell Hall at the Jack C. Taylor Music Center, the historic and now fully renovated home of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. The opening — the culmination of a two-year, $140 million project — marks the SLSO’s 146th season and Powell Hall’s 100th birthday.

The Jack C. Taylor Music Center encompasses Powell Hall and a 64,000-square-foot expansion that includes an entrance lobby, education center, and backstage wing for performers. The center is named for Taylor, the late founder of Enterprise Rent-A-Car (now Enterprise Mobility, a founding GSL investor) and a prolific donor to St. Louis arts organizations.

Th Bottom Line: The SLSO is the country’s second oldest symphony orchestra and a bedrock for the arts in St. Louis. The renovations offer the world one more reason to visit St. Louis, said Marie-Hélène Bernard, SLSO President and CEO. "We’re going to invite reporters from around the world, from leading publications in music, but also in other sectors. And it is our job as we work with Greater St. Louis, Inc. and Explore St. Louis and other arts institutions to really make sure that the talk about St. Louis goes to a different level.”
