ST. LOUIS AND IISTL LAUDED AS A WELCOMING PLACE FOR IMMIGRANTS
Journalist Soledad O’Brien showcased St. Louis as a place where immigrants can thrive — thanks in no small part to the International Institute of St. Louis, a GSL Investor Council member — in a recent episode of her show, “Matter of Fact.” Correspondent Joie Chen discussed the economic benefits immigrants bring to the region and the work IISTL is doing to make them feel at home. St. Louis, after all, has a “history of rolling out the welcome mat to those in need.”
A BITE OF GOOEY BUTTER: LOCAL TV HOST TALKS UP ST. LOUIS ON NATIONAL AIR
Local 'Studio STL' host Chelsea Haynes was invited to the Drew Barrymore Show in New York City for the show’s “Wish You Were Here” segment. Haynes, who talked up the Gateway Arch, Forest Park, and Union Station, also brought with her STLMade entrepreneur Erica Miller, owner of bakery “The Chocolate Rooster,” who made sure the audience got a bite-sized sample of St. Louis.
HIGH HONORS: JAMES BEARD AWARDS RECOGNIZE SEVEN REGIONAL FINALISTS
The James Beard Foundation Awards — one of the highest honors in the culinary world — has recognized seven entities from the St. Louis metro as semifinalists for 2024, including three restauranteurs, two restaurants, two chefs, and a bakery, all shaping incredible culinary experiences here in the region.

A small ramen shop continues making big waves, as Yelp this week named South St. Louis’ Menya Rui the second-best restaurant in the U.S. The honor comes on the heels of Food & Wine magazine naming Chef and Owner Steven Pursley one of the country’s best new chefs.

A local bartender is on a mission to elevate St. Louis — and win a contest for the title of “National Bar Boss.” Meredith Barry, co-owner of celebrated spots Platypus and New Society, hopes to use contest winnings to offer support and mentorship for up-and-coming mixologists.
WashU’s New $616M Research Building Sets a Global Standard
St. Louis’ global leadership in bioscience, technology, and healthcare was on full display this week as Washington University in St. Louis — an executive-level member of the GSL Chair’s Council — opened its 11-story Neuroscience Research Building, a $616-million, world-class facility that aims to set the standard for the future of medical research.
SCIENCE CENTER IN RUNNING FOR TWO USA TODAY AWARDS
The Saint Louis Science Center, a member of the GSL Investor Council, is in the running in two different categories of USA Today's 10Best Reader's Choice Awards: Best Science Museum and Best Free Museum — another reminder of the world class institutions found right here in the metro.
PURINA PARTNERSHIP MAKES PET-FRIENDLY SHELTER POSSIBLE
In partnership with the Women’s Safe House, Purina, an executive-level member of the GSL Chair’s Council, has opened The Pet Safe House — the first pet kennel at an emergency shelter in St. Louis. The facility allows victims of domestic violence to keep their pets with them when seeking safety and security.
Serving seasonal eats, Fresh Gatherings Cafe + Farm is a unique culinary teaching lab on the Saint Louis University campus — and serves as a model for colleges far and wide.
