POLICY PROGRESS: GSL SEES ADVANCEMENT OF PRIORITY BILL, BRINGS TOGETHER LEGISLATIVE LEADERS
As the Missouri legislative session ramps up, Greater St. Louis, Inc. is progressing its public policy priorities. This week, the Senate Economic Development Committee gave initial approval to the Revitalizing Downtowns and Main Streets Act, a Greater St. Louis, Inc. public policy priority that would incentivize the conversion of vacant office space in Missouri’s downtowns and along its Main Streets into vibrant residential space.
The sponsors of the bill, Senator Steve Roberts and Representative Travis Wilson, joined a number of their colleagues last week during the first GSL Public Policy Speaker Series event of the year. They discussed two key pieces of legislation — the Revitalizing Downtowns and Main Streets Actand the Advanced Manufacturing Recruitment Act — as well as the major policy needs of the state of Missouri and how we can work together to move them forward to advance inclusive economic growth.
ST. LOUIS-BASED APIIC PARTNERS WITH NATIONAL SCIENCE NONPROFIT
The St. Louis-based Advanced Pharmaceutical Innovation Center and the U.S. Pharmacopeia have entered a strategic collaboration to investigate ways to solve real-world supply chain challenges impacting patients in the United States. The collaboration will support nationwide efforts to bolster medicine supply chain resilience and mitigate or prevent drug shortages.
ADVANCE ST. LOUIS: PUBLIC SAFETY IS CRITICAL TO GROWTH
St. Louis leaders came together this week for an impactful discussion on public safety. GSL CEO Jason Hall kicked off the discussion, noting that public safety is a top policy priority for GSL. “Advance STL: How St. Louis is Battling Crime,” hosted by the St. Louis Business Journal, brought together Gabe Gore, Circuit Attorney, City of St. Louis; Wilford Pinkney Jr., Director, City of St. Louis Office of Violence Prevention; and Robert J. Tracy, Chief of Police, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.
NEW FUNDING FURTHERS WASHU RESEARCH AND INNOVATION
Washington University in St. Louis — an executive-level member of the GSL Chair’s Council — this week announced two multi-million-dollar awards funding research and innovation. A $20 million contract from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health will help a biomedical engineering professor improve high-resolution eye imaging systems, while a $7.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health will support a new radiation oncology center. WashU’s School of Medicine is one of the top institutions in the country in total NIH funding.
The Missouri Technology Corporation will fund three St. Louis-based startups in its current batch of venture capital investments: Azome Therapeutics Inc., BIOIO Inc., and King of the Curve. Last year, GSL helped to secure $125 million for MTC to help drive innovation and entrepreneurship, an ongoing public policy priority.
The startup scene is thriving in St. Louis, and St. Louis INNO has identified 11 that are successfully tackling challenges with bold vision and purpose. From a GSL Diverse Business Accelerator grad to an ag software firm, these startups are the ones to watch.
ST. LOUIS’ BLACK REP DEBUTS WORLD PREMIER PRODUCTION
The Black Rep has debuted a world premier with the kickoff of its 47th season this month. A play by Paul Webb — the screenwriter behind the film “Selma” — “Hold On!” explores the relationship between President Lyndon Johnson and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
