COUNTERPUBLIC OPENS IN ST. LOUIS THIS WEEKEND, TRANSFORMING JEFFERSON AVENUE
One of the largest public arts initiatives in the country opens in St. Louis this weekend. Counterpublic 2023, a triennial civic exhibition focusing on public memory and reparative futures, weaves 30 artist commissions into the daily life of St. Louis along a six-mile stretch of Jefferson Avenue from April 15 to July 15.
“We wanted to create a large-scale public art festival that was free, that was open, that was for St. Louis—for people to come to St. Louis and experience the full range of art and culture that already exists here,” said Counterpublic Co-founder and Artistic Director James McAnally.
UNION AT THE GROVE NAMED MULTIFAMILY DEVELOPMENT OF THE YEAR
Commercial real estate brand CoStar has named the $40 million Union at the Grove the Multifamily Development of the Year in St. Louis. Located in Forest Park Southeast, the six-building project was developed by Green Street Real Estate Ventures, an executive-level member of the GSL Chair’s Council, in partnership with Greater St. Louis, Inc. and others.
ILLINOIS-BASED HOLLAND CONSTRUCTION EXPANDS TO MISSOURI
Swansea, Illinois-based Holland Construction Services, a GSL Chair’s Council member, will open a new office in St. Louis Thursday, April 20, contributing to “St. Louis’ exciting growth story,” said Founder and CEO Bruce Holland. The new, 6,500-square-foot Missouri office will house 16 employees and support the company’s growth in the state, which contributes more than half of the company’s revenue.
The Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis, a GSL investor member, wants to grow tourism, tax dollars, and the metro’s reputation as an arts destination through a new website and marketing push. Studies have shown that St. Louis arts organizations support more than 19,000 jobs and almost $600 million in economic activity.
“What this website is hoping to accomplish is to be able to put St. Louis on the map as being an arts town; a place that people can come and have a very unique experience compared to other cities across the United States,” said Jay Scherder, senior communications manager for RAC.
GSL DELEGATION MEETS WITH POLICY MAKERS IN JEFFERSON CITY
Greater St. Louis, Inc. this week led a delegation of investors and community leaders to Jefferson City during our annual Day at the Missouri Capitol. The group met with key state elected officials to advocate for regional business priorities, including public safety, stable funding for the Missouri Technology Corporation, increased funding for public transit, and legislation that incentivizes Missouri businesses to increase their offerings of internships and apprenticeships.
Husch Blackwell, LLP, an executive-level member of the GSL Chair’s Council, has hired former senior U.S. Senator Roy Blunt to lead the firm’s new Leadership Strategies Advisory Services group out of its Washington D.C. offices. As Chairman of the group, Blunt and his team will provide policy advice, evaluate risk, and offer client support.
MERIDIAN INVESTING $100+ MILLION IN NORTH ST. LOUIS COUNTY EXPANSION
Meridian Medical Technologies, a Kindeva Drug Delivery Company, announced today it will expand manufacturing capabilities in Bridgeton, Missouri, investing more than $100 million over the next four years in a newly purchased facility. The new 155,000-square-foot facility will support increased production of drug-device combination products, creating job opportunities in the St. Louis area.
JASON HALL ON KMOX: “GROWTH MUST BE OUR TOP CIVIC PRIORITY”
Greater St. Louis, Inc. CEO Jason Hall joined the hosts of KMOX’s “The Show” to discuss the region’s recent census numbers and the very real signs of growth throughout the metro, from the Brickline Greenway to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency’s campus. “It is what we are doing now that ensures that when we get to the end of this decade, we put this region on a different trajectory.”
St. Louis-based Stifel, an executive-level member of the GSL Chair’s Council, plans to take advantage of opportunities in the venture capital market in the wake of Silicon Valley Bank’s collapse. The company, which launched its venture banking business in 2018, hopes to serve as a hub for the entrepreneurial community, connecting, founders, CFOs, and investors.
COOKBOOK PROJECT BRINGS ST. LOUIS TOGETHER THROUGH FOOD
A new cookbook project from GSL Member Investor International Institute of St. Louis and STLMade Global Foods Group hopes to bring people together through food. Residents and restaurants are invited to submit their favorite dishes that use ingredients not typically found in conventional grocery stores. “This cookbook tells a story of how diverse this community is and how through gastronomy we can find our way to each other,” said International Institute President and CEO Arrey Obenson.
RESTAURATEURS PAVING THE WAY FOR WOOD RIVER REINVENTION
A pizza restaurant in Wood River, Illinois, is contributing to the redevelopment of the town’s commercial corridor. The popularity of 1929 Pizza and Wine, a new eatery in a renovated building, is bringing renewed interest and inquiries to the formerly bustling town, whose officials hope to see six to 10 additional businesses open their doors in the coming years. A key mandate of the STL 2030 Jobs Plan, revitalizing the metro’s small business districts will help stabilize communities and create new jobs.
EVENT SERIES HELPS PREP BUSINESSES FOR GOVERNMENT CONTRACTS
A series of events organized by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency in partnership with T-REX will help the St. Louis metro’s small businesses prepare themselves for pursuing federal government contract and award opportunities. The next installment on April 20 will introduce government contracting, small business certification, registration in the System for Award Management, and more.
ST. LOUIS TECH STARTUP INTRODUCES ELECTRIC RAIL CARS
An innovative startup out of St. Louis hopes to make rail shipping safer and more efficient. Three electric TugVolt rail cars, developed by local tech company Intramotev, will be shipped to mining companies by the end of the year, offering a safer, quicker, and more environmentally friendly way to move goods via rail.
