Contributing to the Community: GSL’s Fellows Experience Dispatches 100+ Volunteers for Day of Service
The Fellows Experience — a year-long program of Greater St. Louis, Inc. that builds leadership capacity for inclusive economic growth — today puts into practice its robust curriculum. More than 100 Fellows volunteers served at 13 nonprofits as part of the program’s annual day of service. Fellows in St. Louis and beyond learned more about these vital organizations, from Girls, Inc. St. Louis to Make a Wish Foundation, while contributing to their communities.
Michele Tucker, President and CEO, United Way of Greater St. Louis — a GSL Investor Council member — kicked off the day during a rally call, recalling her own experience as a graduate of the Fellows program and offering insight from her position leading the largest volunteer center in the region.
The Fellows Experience is currently accepting applications for its next cohort, set to begin this fall.
Four St. Louis startups will receive $50,000 in funding and support through a new, 14-week accelerator program. The New Venture Accelerator, housed in the Chaifetz Center for Entrepreneurship at Saint Louis University — a GSL Chair’s Council member — is open to SLU students and alumni and helps develop “strong companies that add to our St. Louis entrepreneurial ecosystem.”
CNBC named Scale AI — a tech company that brought hundreds of jobs to Downtown St. Louis in 2022 — one of the year’s top “disruptors” in the artificial intelligence sector. Scale AI, a member of the GeoFutures Coalition, moved to St. Louis because of the growing geospatial ecosystem, citing a desire to cultivate talent and job creation outside of traditional tech hubs.
Winning STL: Curtis Francois Bets Big on Racing — and St. Louis
In the latest video from WinningSTL, the series from GSL Chair’s Council Member the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Publisher Ian Caso talked to Curtis Francois, owner of World Wide Technology Raceway, about the impact of NASCAR on the St. Louis metro and the importance of collaboration to drive growth.
“In my career I have never seen the collective effort that is being expended right now to deal with issues and challenges that St. Louis has,” said Francois. “I am just thrilled to see it all coming together. It’s not all front and center, but I’m telling you as a lifelong St. Louisan, I’m proud of what’s going on in our city right now.”
A $22.7 million rehabilitation project will turn a former north St. Louis city school into a 75-bed addiction treatment and recovery center. The new Jubilee Wellness Center, a project of the Jubilee Community Development Corporation, will house 75 beds for men recovering from substance use disorder, marrying community support with neighborhood revitalization.
Connecting Foreign-Born Talent with St. Louis Businesses
A program of GSL Investor Council member the International Institute, the Mosaic Project is working to make St. Louis the fastest growing major metro for immigration by 2025. The organization’s “25 by 25” plan would bring 25,000 immigrants into the metro, building up the region’s workforce and boosting its economic growth potential.
In State of the City, Mayor Jones Announces New Workforce Development Hub
Working toward a “safer, stronger, healthier” St. Louis, Mayor Tishaura O. Jones announced the creation of a new workforce development hub in north St. Louis city during her annual State of the City address this week. What was previously Killark Electric headquarters will become the Monarch at MLK, housing the new hub, the Land Reutilization Authority, and the Office of Violence Prevention and its Northside Economic Empowerment Center.
For the third consecutive year, Greater St. Louis, Inc. and the City of St. Louis will bring City Social — Downtown St. Louis’ premier summer block party — back to Washington Avenue, Friday, May 17. This vibrant activation draws crowds Downtown while showcasing and supporting local restaurants and musicians.
